But there are also plenty of cheap, low-quality katanas of which you should be aware. Some even use the same tamahagane steel that was once used to make these swords several centuries ago. Today, blademiths in Japan and elsewhere continue to make katanas. Instead, they used different, lower-quality types of steel, resulting in low-quality katanas. Japan had a shortage of supplies and materials at the time, so blademiths couldn't use tamahagane steel to forge swords for military officers. When compared to the traditional katana, however, the gunto was inferior in terms of quality. A special type of modern katana, known as the gunto, was typically used for this purpose. At the time, the government required all military officers to carry a sword. For everyone else, though, carrying a katana was off limits and grounds for legal action.ĭuring 20th century Japan, however, the Japanese government began mass-producing katanas in preparation of World War II.
